World Down Syndrome Day/ Global call for inclusion and equality

World Down Syndrome Day is marked each year on March 21, a symbolic date associated with trisomy 21 – the genetic cause of this condition.

This day was officially declared by the United Nations in 2012, with the aim of raising awareness, promoting social inclusion, and combating prejudice against people with Down Syndrome.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when an individual has an extra chromosome 21. It can affect physical development, cognitive abilities, and overall health.

However, people with this syndrome can lead active lives, be educated, work, and make valuable contributions to society if properly supported.

The main message of this day is respect and dignity for every individual, as well as the importance of inclusion in education, the labor market, and community life.

One of the most used slogans remains "Leave No One Behind", which underlines the need for equality and equal opportunities for all.

This year's theme is "Together Against Loneliness," highlighting the challenge of social isolation often experienced by people with disabilities and the need for greater connection, inclusion, and support from the community.

A well-known symbol of this day is the wearing of different and colorful socks, representing diversity and acceptance of differences.

According to global data, about 1 in 700 births in the world is associated with Down Syndrome. Thanks to improvements in health care, the life expectancy of people with this syndrome has increased significantly, while early intervention, therapy and education remain key factors for their development and integration into society./ CNA
