New details/ How the containers with toxic waste were discovered

The executive director of the Basel Network, Jim Puckett, has revealed new details of how the containers of toxic waste were discovered, leaving the Port of Durrës for Thailand and China.

Puckett said on Erla Mëhilli's show that everything started with the denunciation of an anonymous informant.

Following the denunciation, photos and evidence were provided of the cargo in China, which contained more than 8% lead.

He stated that the waste was produced from furnace dust and is classified as toxic waste according to the Basel Convention.

“We were given this information by an informant who was afraid to reveal who he is to the world. We were careful to verify the information, we obtained photos of the cargoes and evidence of cargoes passed to China that were intercepted by the Chinese in April. We discovered the same containers being loaded in the port of Durrës with a brown material. That material was analyzed by the Chinese to have more than 8% lead, which makes it a hazardous waste. All the figures sent by the informants told us about a real problem, even though these 102 containers that we asked to be returned have not been analyzed. We are 95% sure that it is waste produced by industry, from furnace dust, toxic waste according to the Basel Convention. We are not quite sure about the material. For me it is extraordinary that you have that material in the port of Durrës and leave it open, you cannot leave such material open. Without anyone knowing what it contains, the dangers if it rains, if the wind blows can spread this material. We saw photos of how they were being loaded, with a tractor to bring them inside the container, they were not sealed", emphasized the executive director of the Basel Network./ CNA
