Meta's lawyer says publicly: Meta was not raped by SPAK

Since his arrest in October 2024, there have been a series of attacks and accusations from the opposition and Veliaj's media that Freedom Party leader Ilir Meta was "kidnapped" and raped by SPAK.

But today his lawyer Kujtim Cakrani publicly told us that the State Police is responsible for the manner of arrest and the violence against the leader of the PL.

Cakrani says that the police have engaged their unidentified structures, as if it were a dangerous person with a criminal record, not a former president.

"The police, who were supposed to appear with the execution order and the letter of rights provided for by the Code and the Constitution, did not do so. They acted only in police uniform, without identifying themselves by name, police number, or without presenting the execution order issued by the court," he said.

"I would first focus on the administrative investigation that the Ombudsman conducted immediately after seeing the video in the media of how the former President of the Republic of Albania, Ilir Meta, was kidnapped.

The Ombudsman conducted a six-month investigation and a few days ago, he also made available to us the recommendations, that is, the findings that he has ascertained and the recommendations that he has made to the Minister of Interior, the Director General of the State Police, regarding the method of arrest.

There is no doubt that in this report, the Ombudsman expresses himself in legal language and cannot say that a "kidnapping" occurred, but rather describes it as an unjust legal method of arrest. Because, if he were to use the term "kidnapping", this would be fatal, so he has taken care to stay within the legal framework.

I don't know if you, as the media, have this report, which is about 25 pages long, and the investigations conducted by the Ombudsman have been exhaustive, from the moment of the arrest until today.

What is regrettable is the response that the State Police has given to this report, as well as the Director General, who in this letter has responded to the Ombudsman's questions with attempts to deceive not only him, but also public opinion.

From the moment the police were ordered by the prosecution to execute the decision of October 20, 2024, the State Police, like never before, has mobilized criminal police forces and the way this operation was organized has been totally repressive.

As if we were dealing with a bandit or a terrorist organization. The police have engaged their unidentified structures, as if it were a dangerous person with a criminal record, not a former president.

We are talking about levels that exceed even the standards of a state with authoritarian tendencies. The police, who were supposed to present themselves with the execution order and the letter of rights provided for by the Code and the Constitution, have not done so. They have acted only in police uniform, without identifying themselves by name, police number, or without presenting the execution order issued by the court.

"Under these conditions, Ilir Meta, taking into account other cases where citizens have been kidnapped by people in police uniform, has not reacted to them, because neither the execution order nor the letter of rights has been made available to him," said Cakrani./ CNA
