Around 400 residents of the village of Tërovë, in the municipality of Maliq, have been facing a serious drinking water problem for more than two weeks. The water that comes from the taps has a strong odor and is unusable, not only for drinking, but also for basic daily needs.
Faced with the lack of a solution, this Tuesday residents went on a protest, demanding immediate intervention from the responsible institutions.
According to residents, the problem has been identified for a long time by the Water Supply and the Municipality of Maliq, but so far no concrete measures have been taken. They say that the water supply network is relatively new and the biggest doubts are related to the source of supply.
"We have a problem with drinking water, for about 2 weeks the water has had a bad smell and is not even good for washing, let alone drinking. The problem is that the Water Supply and the Municipality have also noticed it, but they are not taking any measures. The water supply is new, it was built about 10-15 years ago and is of good quality. The best option is at the source. We have problems with both showering and cooking, because even when it is boiled, the smell is even worse."
The village headman says that checks have been carried out on all supply lines, but the cause of the water contamination has not yet been found. In the meantime, families are forced to buy water, incurring additional costs.
"We have been having problems with drinking water for about 3 weeks. I spoke with the Korça Water Company, they came and checked all the lines. We have no problems with the lines. It is a difficult problem and we do not understand where it is coming from. Perhaps the reason was the heavy rains. Residents have bought water, because the water we have is unusable and there is a risk of poisoning, especially for children."
Other residents also express concern about the situation, emphasizing that this problem has not happened before and that the lack of drinking water is making their daily lives difficult.
"This problem has been going on for two weeks. The water smells very bad and is not drinkable at all. This situation has never happened before. We now buy water or fill it in other places. It is not only for drinking, but also for washing and cooking. We ask that they look into it seriously and fix it."
"We have always had good water, but for about two weeks it has had a very bad smell and is not drinkable. We also buy water for cooking. Even when we wash clothes, they smell bad. It is very difficult for every family."
The same problem is reported in the village of Pendavinj, also in the municipality of Maliq. In total, about 1,000 residents of these areas are facing a lack of drinking water, turning this situation into a major health and social problem. Residents are demanding urgent intervention before the situation worsens further./ CNA
