While rates of flight to the United Kingdom (UK) appear to have fallen this year, we still remain the number one country for asylum applications in the UK.

Official data from the Home Office, compiled by Monitor, shows that in the first quarter of 2023 there were a total of 1,036 new asylum applications in the United Kingdom, down from 1,440 in the same period, a decrease of 28%.

Other data published by local media show that from June 2022 to June 2023, there were 11,790 Albanian citizens who sought asylum status, ranking first among applicants worldwide. The second were the Afghans, with about 10 thousand.

In total, more than 175,000 asylum seekers are waiting for an initial decision on their application, a record high, statistics recently released by the Home Office revealed. The overall increase in pending cases was "due to more cases entering the asylum system than initial decisions being made", the Home Office said.

Of the 11,790 applications by Albanian nationals, 7,557 came from boat arrivals crossing the Channel, the data show, although the number of Albanians arriving by small boats fell sharply this year compared to 2022.

In 2022, nearly 16,000 applications for asylum from Albanian citizens were recorded.
Previous data published by the Office of Immigration Statistics, United Kingdom and processed by "Monitor" show that the total number of asylum applications from Albanian citizens in the Kingdom of Joined in 2022 was 15,925, marking a record level for this country.

Compared to previous years, asylum applications increased significantly. In 2021, the number of applicants from Albania was 5,147, while in the period 2013-2018 it was on average less than 3 thousand people per year.
