The UK, US, EU and China sign the statement on the catastrophic risk of

The UK, US, EU and China have agreed that Artificial Intelligence poses a potentially catastrophic risk to humanity, in the first international declaration to deal with the rapidly developing technology.

Twenty-eight governments signed the so-called Bletchley Declaration on the first day of an AI security summit hosted by the British government.

The statement does not agree to establish an international test center in the UK, as some in the British government had hoped. But it provides a model for future international cooperation, with future security summits now planned in South Korea in six months and in France in a year.

The statement says: "The potential exists for serious, even catastrophic, harm, whether intentional or unintentional, arising from the more significant capabilities of these AI models."

Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister, welcomed the statement, calling it "a historic achievement that sees the world's biggest AI powers agree on the urgency after realizing the dangers of AI"./ CNA
