Tebas openly criticizes FIFA: Abolishing the red card is just the tip of the iceberg

La Liga president Javier Tebas has strongly criticised FIFA after the decision to suspend the implementation of the one-match ban imposed on Folarin Balogun for 12 months.

The United States forward was allowed to play in the 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. Tebas called the incident "the tip of the iceberg", stating that the credibility of FIFA and football has been damaged for years.

He also criticized what he called the "complicit silence" of many football leaders in the face of such decisions. Earlier, UEFA had also reacted against this decision, calling it unprecedented and unjustifiable.

Meanwhile, the South American Football Confederation backed referee Raphael Claus, who had sent off Balogun against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tebas called for more transparency and respect for the rules from the institutions that govern world football.
