Ronaldo's outburst: You've been trying for 23 years, but I decide when

Cristiano Ronaldo did not spare reporters on the eve of the match between Portugal and Spain in the 1/8 stage of the World Cup. During the press conference, the Portuguese captain spoke about his future, the criticism he has received over the years and his objectives with the national team in this tournament.

The Al Nasr striker said he does not want the discussion to focus on the end of his career with Portugal. According to Ronaldo, this is not the time to talk about retirement from the national team, as the focus should remain on the important match against Spain. He stressed that the decision about the future will be made by himself and not as a result of pressure or external comments.

Ronaldo recalled that he is participating in the sixth World Cup of his career, while continuing to hold important records in international football, with 146 goals scored in 232 appearances with the Portugal jersey. The Lusitanian admitted that he is no longer the player he was a few years ago, but underlined that he continues to contribute at high levels. The Portuguese recalled that in this edition of the World Cup he has scored three goals and has helped the team on its way to the knockout stage.

Regarding criticism, Ronaldo said that for more than two decades he has often been the subject of discussions and negative comments, but according to him, these situations have not prevented him from moving forward. He said that the criticism has helped him improve and develop as a footballer, adding that the experience gained over the years has made him more calm in managing such situations.

"You have been trying to kill me for 23 years. As I said, I will retire when I decide, not when you decide. You always ask the same question. I don't want to draw attention to this because it is less important than the match against Spain. I am not the player I used to be, but I am not that bad, I scored three goals in this World Cup. What I have done throughout my career is to constantly adapt to changing times.

"I even say 'thank you' for the attacks I've suffered since I turned 40. Criticism is what makes you grow the most, so thanks to you journalists, you've made me grow even more. You've tried to kill me for the last 23 years, but you must have understood that it wasn't worth it, that it was a waste of time, yet you kept trying again and again. I will be neither more nor less, but Cristiano Ronaldo, regardless of whether I win the World Cup or not. Age gives you maturity, experience and the ability to appreciate the relativity of things," Ronaldo declared.

The focus now shifts to the field of play, where Portugal and Spain will face off for a place in the World Cup quarterfinals. The spotlight will once again be on Ronaldo, who is looking to continue his journey with the Portuguese national team and add another chapter to his long international career.
