Own goal record, how many have been registered in the World Cup

The 2026 World Cup is being characterized by an unusual statistic, the high number of own goals scored during the tournament.

Up to this stage, 14 own goals have been recorded, breaking the previous record of 12 own goals set at the 2018 World Cup.

A total of 12 of them were scored during the group stage, while two others came in the knockout stages. One of the most notable cases is that of Mohamed Hany, who became the first player in history to cause two own goals in the same World Cup.

The United States have been among the teams to benefit most from these episodes, with own goals against Paraguay and Australia. Compared to Qatar 2022, where only two own goals were recorded throughout the tournament, the difference is significant.

The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams and the increased number of matches are considered to be among the main reasons for this statistic. The record is expected to increase further as the tournament continues with the decisive stages.
