World Cup draw, Albania and Kosovo learn the pot if they qualify

FIFA has published the official draw procedures for the 2026 World Cup, confirming several important innovations that directly affect the distribution of the top-ranked teams in the tournament.

For the first time in World Cup history, the top four teams will not be able to face each other until the semi-finals, provided each team wins their respective group.

Spain, ranked first, and Argentina, ranked second, have been "paired" and will automatically be placed on opposite sides of the draw. The same procedure will apply to France, ranked third, and England, ranked fourth, who will be on opposite sides of the knockout stage.

This scheme, similar to that used in tennis tournaments or the new Champions League format, aims to avoid early matches between teams considered to be the strongest. In this way, FIFA seeks to ensure that the most important and potentially most watched combinations occur in the advanced stages of the competition.

FIFA has also confirmed the final division of teams into four pots for the draw to be made on December 5. The six teams expected to emerge from the play-offs, which include Albania and Kosovo, have been placed in pot four.

Pot 3: Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa.

Pot 4: Jordan, Cape Verde, Ghana, Curaçao, Haiti, New Zealand, Winner of European play-offs A, B, C and D, Winner of Intercontinental play-offs 1 and 2.
