Messi shines with hat-trick and reaches Klose, Argentina does not forgive Algeria

Argentina captain Lionel Messi shone in his 200th international appearance, guiding the reigning champions to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening Group J match at the World Cup.

The match, held at Arrowhead Stadium, started at a high pace, with two goals disallowed for offside within the first eight minutes, one for each team.

Messi, who became the first player in history to participate in six World Cups, opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a powerful left-footed shot after an assist from Rodrigo De Paul.

The Argentines dominated possession in the first half, while in the second half the team's star scored twice more, first taking advantage of goalkeeper Luca Zidane's insecurity in the 60th minute and then with a shot from the edge of the area 15 minutes before the end.

With this hat-trick, Messi reached the 16th goal in the history of this tournament, tying him with Miroslav Klose as the all-time leading scorer in the World Cup.
