The Democratic Party is the official opposition and the largest majority of the opposition in Albania. But unfortunately we see the opposition with two faces: the opposition of integration and the opposition of crime.
To be clearer:
The blame for the situation Albania is going through, entering Europe, how it will enter, reforms, etc., without any discussion lies with the government, but the opposition can go to the European chancelleries or make fun of Albanians.
He says he is pro-integration, "we want to enter the EU, to be admitted with conditions, without conditions", in fact, a time wasted by the DP during the time it was in power for integration, after the famous 2009 elections, with the story of "open the boxes or leave" up to the mayor of Fier District.
So, political impasses created by the Socialist Party and the president, Mr. Edi Rama, who savagely blocked Albania's path at a very delicate moment for integration, as today we could be many steps ahead of where we are 15 years later.
That's why we say with two faces; the opposition of integration and the opposition of crime, not because of the opposition's connections with crime, because whatever kind of connection the opposition has, it can't succeed because it's not in power. What harms the state are the connections of power with crime.
But the opposition, with its rhetoric, on the one hand says "we agree on integration, we want to join the EU, we will support you", on the other hand goes to European chancelleries and emphasizes that the government is connected to drugs, crime, money laundering, and the most spectacular is the stance towards the new justice institutions, which the EU should not support and should not finance because they have arrested the opposition leader, imprisoned Ilir Meta, etc., nonsense like this.
First, you cannot be both for integration and against integration.
Secondly, these rhetorics are against integration.
Third, why should the opposition be against the new justice system for a personal matter of Sali Berisha?
He has emphasized that he will continue his battle and has it divided, just as he divided the issue of "non grata", moving forward, continuing to be the leader of the DP, supported by the majority of Democrats and this is clear.
But to go to the EU institutions and tell them not to fund the new justice institutions, i.e. SPAK and GJKKO, when just last week, in four days, there were over 30 people arrested, hundreds of millions of assets seized, money and real estate, which came from drug activity since 2020, construction businessmen, their associates, well-known names in the capital.
How can you tell EU institutions not to support SPAK and the new justice institutions, where former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj has been declared wanted by this SPAK, former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku is under investigation, former Health Minister Ilir Beqaj has been arrested, served several years in prison, and Lefter Koka is wanted by the justice system?
Dozens of high-ranking government officials, mayors to Erion Veliaj, who was seen as Edi Rama's successor, and who is now behind bars. Now, you are either for integration and the fight against corruption, or you are against integration.
The two do not go together, even if you say we are in favor of integration and we are against the new justice system and then say that the government is with crime, with drugs, with hostage-taking and the most spectacular accusations.
In foreign chancelleries, this rhetoric makes opposition representatives look like fools.
Maybe they're not ashamed, maybe they want to look like clowns and funny, but by going there to attack Edi Rama and the government, they're hitting their heads with their feet, because you can't say that the new justice system shouldn't be funded, because if it doesn't have funding, it remains weak and remains in the hands of the government.
If the new justice system, SPAK, despite its problems, were controlled by Rama, no minister, mayor, or other official would be under investigation, arrested, or on trial.
But the opposition agrees that all state officials should be investigated and imprisoned for corruption, but not Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha.
Either they support and investigate everyone, or "not me, but them", it doesn't work, because you really look stupid.
Further still, to say that the institutions of the new justice system are being captured. By whom? By Edi Rama?
But when Edi Rama is an accomplice of criminal groups, drugs, and trafficking, how is it possible that there are dozens of criminal groups dismantled by SPAK, there are hundreds of people wanted for drug trafficking, there are hundreds of people from criminal groups arrested with seized assets who are one by one being brought to trial, there are dozens of cases of murders and serious criminal events solved, with collaborators of justice, discovered by Sky, Enchrochat, with other facts and evidence?
On the one hand, it means we are for integration, but against justice, because it has hit the opposition leader.
What about these other things that justice has struck down? Or does the opposition shout "oh my mother, oh my doctor?"
It is painful how you can say that justice has been seized. But who has carried out this war on crime? Those dismantled criminal groups, those attacks on drug trafficking, who has executed them? SPAK prosecutors have signed them. Aren't the Albanian judges the ones who signed them? Isn't this the justice that signs them? Are there problems? Without a doubt.
But politics goes and solves problems, it doesn't say don't support justice. The opposition goes with concrete proposals on how to improve this justice system, which has endless problems and there is no discussion of this, but justice is not fought with the standard of "imprison Rama so that I can come to power."
That Rama has had ministers, mayors, dozens of "martyrs" killed, while the opposition has had two people under investigation, Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha. But it is not a war against the opposition to put former prime ministers under investigation.
It seems to him that it is a war against the government when he takes away the deputy prime ministers, ministers, mayors and all the main human assets that brought him to power and on which Edi Rama relied.
Therefore, there cannot be both a pro-integration opposition and an anti-crime opposition, because being against justice means being pro-crime, nothing more than that.
Therefore, the opposition must change its rhetoric, it must change its approach. Maybe you can't support certain individuals of the new justice system, but you can go with names, with concrete facts, with evidence, precisely for these individuals who may be problematic for the new justice system.
On the other hand, to propose how to advance justice reform and how we can have a more independent justice system and not be held hostage to absurd rhetoric that leads nowhere, but makes the opposition look like a fool and makes it look ridiculous./ CNA
