Four goals, a goalpost and a disallowed goal. What happened in Iran-New Zealand

Iran and New Zealand were held to a 2-2 draw in their Group G match at the World Cup in Los Angeles, leaving New Zealand still without a win in their history at the tournament.

Although considered the lowest-ranked team in this edition of the World Cup, New Zealand started the match positively, taking the lead in the seventh minute of the game.

The first goal of the match came from striker Elijah Just, who scored with a half-volley inside the area. Iran responded by increasing the pressure and midway through the first half, Mehdi Taremi hit the post.

The Asian team equalized in the 32nd minute, when Ramin Rezaeian capitalized on a ball left in the area after Moghanlou's shot was blocked. In the first half's extra time, Iran had a header by Ali Nemati disallowed for offside.

The second half started with two consecutive chances for Iran, but without success. However, as in the first half, New Zealand proved more efficient and regained the advantage in the 54th minute. After another combination with Wood, striker Just penetrated into the area and beat goalkeeper Beiranvand for the score 2-1. Iran's response came ten minutes later, when Mohebi scored with a header in the area after a precise cross from Rezaeian.

Despite efforts from both teams in the remaining minutes, the score remained unchanged, allowing New Zealand to record their fourth draw in seven total matches played at the World Cup.

On the other hand, Iran, who showed resilience by overturning the disadvantage twice, will have a more difficult match in the second group match where they will play against the Belgian national team.
