World Cup, Messi and Mbappe want the record

With the start of the World Cup, the focus will not only be on the trophy, but also on the individual records that could be broken during the tournament.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are two of the names aiming to make history in the World Cup scoring rankings. The current record is held by Miroslav Klose with 16 goals scored in the world championships.

Messi, who is 38 and expected to play in his last World Cup, has scored 13 goals so far and is just three goals away from the record. The Argentina captain will have one last chance to match or surpass the former Germany striker's tally.

Right behind him is Kylian Mbappe with 12 World Cup goals. The France striker and captain, at 27, has the chance to approach the record this season and potentially attack it in another World Cup in the future.

Both players will be in the spotlight not only for their teams' goals, but also for this historic record.
