World Cup, Germany's troubled midfielder

Leon Goretzka is expected to start the 2026 World Cup from the bench after failing to secure a starting spot in the friendlies against Finland and the USA.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann had previously promised a permanent role in the lineup to the midfielder, who he had left out of Euro 2024, but recent performances have changed the hierarchy in the team.

In an interview with FIFA, Goretzka stated that his main motivation is to leave behind the disappointments of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and restore enthusiasm to the fans.

Germany enters this tournament ranked tenth in the world, a position that according to the player shows their current reality outside the group of main favorites, but which can serve as an impetus to have a positive performance without the great pressure of the result.
