Italy "suffers" with coaches, Serie A far from other championships

The constant changes in the benches of Serie A teams continue to be one of the main characteristics of Italian football. A new wave of movements is expected this summer, with at least nine clubs that have changed or are in the process of changing coaches. Atalanta, Bologna, Fiorentina, Lazio, Milan, Napoli, Sassuolo, Torino and Monza are the names currently involved in this process, while the list could expand further in the coming weeks.

This situation confirms a trend that has been going on in Italian football for years. According to statistics, around 75% of coaches in Serie A do not manage to stay in charge for more than one season. The average stay on the bench is only 10.9 months, a figure that places the Italian championship among the leagues with the lowest technical stability in Europe.

The phenomenon is not limited to Italy. An analysis of 55 different leagues shows that 65.2% of teams in the world have changed coaches at least once in the last 12 months. However, the differences between the main European leagues remain noticeable.

In Serie A, the number of coaches who have managed to build a long-term project is very limited. Currently, only Kosta Runjaic at Udinese and Cesc Fabregas at Como can be considered coaches with a long period at the helm of their teams. In the case of Fabregas, the situation is even more special, as he also has direct links to the club's structure.

When compared to other major European leagues, the differences are significant. In France, the average tenure of coaches is 17 months. In Germany, this figure increases to 23.3 months, in Spain to 27.8 months, while in England it reaches 29.1 months. Similarly, in the Premier League, around 40 percent of coaches stay in office for at least two years, while in La Liga this percentage rises to 45 percent.

Examples of teams that have achieved significant results thanks to technical continuity are numerous. In recent seasons, long-term projects such as those of Mikel Arteta at Arsenal and Luis Enrique at PSG have shown that stability on the bench can be an important factor in team development and achieving objectives.

In Italian football, frequent changes of coaches often mean the start of a new cycle each season. This means new tactical ideas, changes in the squad and extra time for the team to adapt. As a result, clubs find it more difficult to build long-term projects and create a sustainable sporting identity.
