Study: Global warming could increase physical inactivity and kill 500,000 more

A new study warns that global warming could make physical exercise more difficult and contribute to hundreds of thousands of additional deaths a year by 2050.

Rising temperatures are increasing physical inactivity, because the heat makes it dangerous or difficult to perform activities, even simple ones like walking or housework.

Projections show that by 2050, this could lead to an estimated 470,000–520,000 additional premature deaths per year.

The study also estimates billions in economic losses each year due to reduced productivity.

High temperatures and humidity limit the body's ability to cool down during physical activity. In some tropical and subtropical regions, heat already limits activity for large parts of the year, especially for the elderly.

The effects are strongest in low- and middle-income countries, where access to refrigerated facilities or protective infrastructure is more limited.

The elderly are most at risk, as their bodies have less ability to regulate temperature.

The most affected regions include areas near the equator and places with high temperatures for most of the year./CNA
