About 18% of apartments in Albania are under 40 square meters, a challenge for

According to the latest data from INSTAT, Albania has a total of 726,325 ordinary inhabited dwellings, which are categorized based on usable area and period of construction.

An important aspect that stands out is the distribution of the number of inhabitants per dwelling, which varies from one inhabitant to five or more. The smallest dwellings, with an area of ??less than 40 square meters, make up 127,552 units, or 18% of the total. In these apartments, most families are made up of one to two members. According to the data, 21,243 dwellings are inhabited by a single person, while 38,947 housing units have two inhabitants. The density begins to increase with families of three and four members, respectively 26,591 and 20,064 inhabitants in these categories.

According to statistics, 156,224 dwellings in the country are occupied by five or more people, indicating a high density in these units. This phenomenon may be related to the fact that in rural areas and traditional families, it is common for large families to live together in one dwelling.

The data show a big change in the composition and structure of housing, underlining the need to improve housing conditions, especially for families with more members. In this context, institutional support to provide adequate housing for all families is a priority that must be addressed to improve the quality of life of Albanian citizens.

According to sociologist Marsida Simo, the housing trends illustrated by these data emphasize the urgent need for new housing policies. "Improving the quality of housing, expanding usable space and building new housing adapted for families with many members are some of the measures that can alleviate the situation.

In addition, aid for social housing and subsidizing projects for the lower classes would help alleviate the pressure of overpopulation and guarantee a better quality of life for all citizens," she concludes./ Monitor magazine.
