New report on child mortality: 4.9 million deaths under 5 in 2024

According to a new report from international organizations such as UNICEF, WHO and the UN, an estimated 4.9 million children under the age of 5 died in 2024. Nearly half of these deaths are newborn babies.

Most deaths are preventable with basic healthcare, vaccines, and simple, low-cost treatments.

The main causes are: premature birth, complications during childbirth, pneumonia, malaria and other infections, malnutrition (a major contributing factor)

Child mortality has been reduced by more than half since 2000

But progress has slowed significantly after 2015.

Experts warn that conflicts, economic crises, climate change and weak health systems are hindering further improvement.

The most affected regions are Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where mortality rates are much higher than in developed countries. /CNA
