WHO: Proper nutrition in schools, a measure against the alarming increase in

The World Health Organization has issued a global call for governments to improve the quality of school meals and create healthier eating environments for children. The move aims to help prevent obesity and related diseases, which are on the rise around the world.

By 2025, about 1 in 10 school-age children (about 188 million) were obese, a figure that for the first time surpassed the number of children who are underweight, according to WHO data. This indicates a major shift towards overweight and obesity in the world's young population.

WHO's main recommendations are: Establishing regulations that increase the availability and consumption of healthy foods and limiting foods high in sugar, bad fats, and salt.

Improving the food environment in schools, not only the food served, but also the way it is promoted, displayed and dismantled.

WHO will help countries implement the guidelines through technical assistance and knowledge sharing.

The WHO is calling for schools around the world to improve nutrition and food environments to give children a healthier start in life, confronting the alarming rise in obesity that threatens the health of the next generation. /CNA
