From TV to Smartphone: The Silent Revolution of the Third Age

While we used to worry about screen time in children, a quiet shift is taking place among the elderly. More and more people in their 60s and 70s are spending hours staring at their phones or tablets, a kind of “phone-based retirement” that is becoming a reality.

The scene is familiar: the family table where the elderly don't tell stories, but focus on their phones. The room where, in addition to the TV, everyone holds another screen in their hand, and moments with grandchildren are mixed with tablet games and constant notifications from apps.

This phenomenon is not simply technology without knowledge. People of this age are the first generation to enter the digital world after growing up, often during periods of isolation. The pandemic accelerated this change, making screens not only a means of communication, but also a window into the world, especially for those who felt alone.

Technology can be positive when used actively: word games, educational videos, chatting with friends, or online hobbies help activate the mind, reduce feelings of loneliness, and create a routine. In these cases, the screen becomes a companion on retirement day.

The problems begin when usage degenerates into passive absorption, endless scrolling, questionable content, misinformation, fear, anger, or digital fraud. Algorithms promote screen time, not quality of experience, and for people with ample free time, this attraction can become almost hypnotic.

The most fundamental question is not just how much time they spend on screens, but what that screen replaces in their lives, their solitude or their lives, and the real answer may not be found on social media, but in a simple human conversation, without technology. /CNA
