Albanian asylum seekers "abandon" France and Germany, return to

France and Germany, two countries to which Albanian citizens seeking asylum flocked in the last wave of immigration to the country, are no longer preferred.

Eurostat data shows that for the first time in recent years, Italy, the "old love" of Albanians, has become the main recipient of asylum requests.

According to Eurostat, a total of 465 asylum applications were registered in Italy in the period January-March, with an increase of 4.5% compared to the same period last year.

Italy became the first host of asylum seekers, with 32% of total requests, while for the last three years it had been in third place, behind France and Germany.

Applications for temporary protection in France, a country that attracted many asylum seekers in recent years due to its social protection policies, have fallen sharply.

In the first three months of the year, there were 355 applications, a 46% decrease year-on-year. Compared to 2022, when they peaked, applications are 4 times lower.

The same trend has occurred in Germany. Applications in this country were only 230 in January-March 2025, a 54% decrease on an annual basis and three times lower than in 2022.

The trend towards this country is to emigrate with work permits, especially professions such as doctors, nurses, and information technology.

Greece has climbed to third place, overtaking Germany, with a steady 245 applications.

In fourth place is Belgium, with 85 applications, a 19% decrease. In Ireland, 30 people applied, a 45% decrease. In other countries, asylum requests are minimal.

In total, 1,445 asylum applications were registered by Albanian citizens in the EU in January-March, a 30% decrease compared to the same period a year earlier. This is the lowest number of asylum applications since the same period in 2021, when there were restrictions on movement due to the pandemic.

Compared to 2022, when the post-pandemic record was set, asylum applications in January-March 2025 were 51% lower./ Monitor Magazine
