Water: The Mental Effects of Dehydration

Feeling sick? Drink more water! This advice may sound as… annoying as “just breathe” when you’re upset, but there’s scientific evidence to suggest that even mild dehydration has psychological effects.

Specifically, a Spanish study involving 65 female students found a correlation between mild dehydration and stress.

According to the study:

More than 90% of participants did not drink enough water to replace the amount they lost during the day. Women with severe stress had lower water balance, indicating a correlation between dehydration and stress.

Another Iranian study with over 3,000 participants again found a correlation between low water consumption and increased rates of anxiety and depression.

Drink more water.

Drinking water throughout the day is a simple strategy for coping with the stresses of everyday life.

Try:

-Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up.

-Drink water with every meal.

-Drink water when you exercise.

-Include foods with high water content, such as watermelon and cucumbers, in your diet.

-Reduce caffeine intake. Caffeine acts as a diuretic and increases water loss from the body. In addition to reducing its consumption, we can drink a glass of water after coffee. /CNA
