A simple mouthwash can help detect the earliest signs of stomach cancer which strikes thousands of Britons every year.

Researchers found that people with or at risk of cancer had identifying bacteria in their mouths. They said that oral rinses will pick up specific bacteria associated with stomach cancer even before it forms. This can help in the early diagnosis of serious disease.

"The ideal time to try to prevent cancer is when it's ready to turn into cancer," explained Shruthi Reddy Perati, author and general surgery resident at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine.

By analyzing samples of the mouth bacteria of people with or at risk of stomach cancer, the researchers identified specific biomarkers associated with the disease to develop their anti-cancer rinse.

"We were able to identify people who had precancerous conditions," Perati said.

Stomach cancer is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide with only 6,500 Britons diagnosed with the disease each year.

Early symptoms of the disease are similar to stomach ulcers, and include difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain and loss of appetite./ CNA
