Study: Walking every day reduces the risk of cancer

A major study from the University of Oxford has shown that simply walking more every day can significantly reduce the chances of developing cancer.

Involving over 85,000 adults in the UK, the research tracked people's daily step count using activity trackers and found a strong link between more movement and less risk of cancer.

As little as 5,000 steps a day began to show benefits, while those who walked 7,000 to 9,000 steps each day saw their cancer risk drop by 11% to 16%. The positive effect seemed to stabilize beyond 9,000 steps, suggesting that the total amount of movement matters more than how intense it is.

While brisk walking had some impact, it was overall activity — even at a slow pace — that really made a difference. The study focused on 13 specific cancers, including colon, lung, liver, breast and bladder.

Higher activity was most closely linked to lower risk of cancers such as stomach, liver and lung.

Unlike past studies that relied on self-report or focused on intense exercise, this study used wearable devices for accuracy and showed that light daily movement, like walking, may be enough to protect your health.

Scientists say taking more steps a day may be one of the easiest ways to reduce your risk of cancer./ CNA
