If there's one thing that gets put off time and time again each week, it's grocery shopping. It needs to be done quickly, stay within budget, not fill the fridge with things that will end up in the trash, and still be able to prepare balanced meals.

The 5-4-3-2-1 method is a simple strategy, courtesy of content creator and chef Will Coleman. The philosophy behind it? Buy a specific number of items from each basic food category:

5 vegetables

4 fruits

3 sources of protein

2 sauces or creams

1 grain/carbohydrate

+1 dessert

The goal is not to follow a rule exactly, but to have a clear and flexible guide that will help you make more targeted, healthy, and economical choices.

Make a list of what you already have in your cupboards, fridge and freezer.

Write down the categories 5-4-3-2-1 and fill them with foods you like and know you will eat, such as:

Vegetables: carrots, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini

Fruit : banana, avocado, pineapple, mango

Protein: fillet, chicken, eggs

Sauces/Creams: tomato sauce, hummus

Grains : quinoa

Treat: oatmeal cookies, no added sugar

Try to choose ingredients that taste good together so you can make different combinations. /CNA
