Study/ Here's what marijuana and cannabis do to brain development

A recent French study said that cannabis use increases the risk of heart attack and stroke more than cocaine, while a Canadian study found that the risk of dementia is linked to cannabis-related hospital visits in older individuals.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist, brain imaging specialist and founder of Amen Clinics in California, confirmed that it is "clear" that people who use marijuana have lower blood flow to the brain, according to brain imaging studies performed at his clinics for decades.

These findings, along with links between marijuana and heart disease, are supported by other recent research.

"We've been lied to that marijuana is harmless, that marijuana is good medicine and I think for some people, it can be beneficial. But teenagers who use it, or people in their 20s, have a higher incidence of anxiety, depression, suicide and psychosis," Amen said.

In a new study that compared people who smoked cigarettes with those who smoked marijuana, marijuana users suffered more lung damage, he noted.

"This is just not good for us," Amen said.

Amen noted that one of the "terrible trends" he has seen is parents smoking marijuana with their teens and young adults.

"It makes me think we're going down the wrong path," he said.

While some people might argue that alcohol is worse for the body than marijuana, Amen stressed that "neither of them are good for you."

"Why would you want to consume something that makes your brain older than it actually is," he asked.

Since a young adult's brain is not fully developed, cannabis use can harm young people mentally, causing problems like anxiety and depression, Amen warned.

"When you start using marijuana, alcohol or other drugs, your development stops," Amen said./ CNA
