How many hours of physical exercise can "save" the brain

Today we know how important physical exercise is for the proper functioning of the brain and especially for cognitive function. Among all the positive effects it can offer our body, a new study highlights another advantage, which is located deep within the brain.

According to a new study, published in "Stroke and Vascular Neurology", systematic exercise - walking, swimming, cycling, dancing - can reduce blood loss in people with intracerebral hemorrhage, according to a study from the University of Gothenburg.

Intracerebral hemorrhage is considered one of the most dangerous strokes for the brain. The risk of serious consequences from bleeding increases with the extent of bleeding.

The study analyzed data from 686 people treated for intracerebral bleeding at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg from 2014 to 2019.

Those who reported regular physical activity of at least four hours per week had significantly less bleeding than those who reported being inactive.

The more active people experienced reduced bleeding in both deep areas of the brain, which are often associated with high blood pressure, and superficial areas, which are associated with age-related conditions such as dementia.

All those admitted to the hospital with a suspected intracerebral hemorrhage undergo a CT scan of the brain. Depending on the severity of the bleeding, neurosurgery may be required. However, in most cases, non-surgical methods and medications are used to manage symptoms and promote the patient's recovery.
