Seasonal viruses in children/ Pediatric infectious medicine, recommendations and

Despite the fact that it seems that the period of respiratory viruses has already ended, with the arrival of the summer season, an increase in cases of some other viruses such as gastrointestinal ones or even skin infections among children is observed.

Prof. dr. Gjeorgjina Kuli, pediatric infectious disease doctor at Hygeia Hospital informs us more about the most frequent medical problems that affect the pediatric age group mainly during the summer season, how to recognize the associated symptoms.

Above all, the doctor comes with a series of recommendations and advice on how parents should act in such situations, as well as in which cases they should seek specialized medical help from a pediatrician.

Explanation to the doctor:

Now we are in the summer season and let's see what is the disease or infections that affect children the most in this season.

Despite the fact that it seems that respiratory viruses are over, this season we see several other viruses that cause morbidity in children. Gastrointestinal viruses usually dominate, i.e. those with diarrhea and vomiting, often accompanied by high temperature and various degrees of dehydration, fluid loss in children, but also many skin infections.

What we have noticed in recent times is the increase in cases of chicken pox, that is, an infection known in the vernacular as "tooth pox", in which the child has pimples spread all over the skin. They are initially filled with a clear liquid, then they turn into a cloudy liquid, but what parents should be careful of is that these elements on the skin can be infected by the overlap of different infections and give situations that require hospital treatment.

An important infection of this season and I can say of these last weeks, I can also say is the infection caused by some viruses called coxsackie. It is contagious, they are spread by touch, by food, by being together in a room, for example in children in kindergartens and nurseries, and they give what is called especially hand, mouth, foot.

It is in these organs that small, red pimples appear, which are mainly spread on the hands, on their palms, on their feet and in the mouth and inside it. Normally, they are viral infections that are cured, but they have no specific treatment, care is simply needed by reducing the temperature, maintaining the rehydration system, i.e. fluids in the body and protecting the skin from the overlap of secondary infections.

But you always have to be alert, that despite the fact that we are in the summer season, we can have other infections, which are not characteristic for it, such as respiratory viruses, bronchiolitis, or tonsillitis, that is, the putrid infection of the tonsils, the infection of the ear, something for which mothers should be careful and go to the family doctor or other pediatricians to get first aid against these infections./ CNA.al
