Ingredients that prevent the accumulation of fat in the liver

Two compounds found in hops, a key ingredient in beer, can stop the dangerous buildup of fat in the liver, potentially offering a solution to prevent and treat steatosis, a new study suggests.

Research from the University of Oregon suggests ingredients derived from hops, which have been used in brewing beer since ancient times, may prevent the dangerous buildup of fat in the liver known as hepatic steatosis.

The findings, published in eLife, are important because this condition affects nearly a quarter of the population in Europe and America. While high alcohol consumption is often associated with liver problems, 25% of these problems occur in people with a history of little or no alcohol consumption, which is why their disease is known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease ( NAFLD).

Resistance to insulin, the hormone that helps control blood sugar levels, is a risk factor for NAFLD, as is obesity, a high-fat diet, and high blood lipid levels. The liver helps the body process nutrients and also acts as a filter for the circulatory system, so excessive accumulation of fat in this organ can lead to inflammation and liver failure.

The scientists found that TXN helped control weight gain associated with a high-fat diet and stabilize blood sugar levels, factors that are equally involved in preventing the accumulation of fat in the liver.

The mechanism behind the effectiveness of the compounds involves the nuclear receptor PPAR (a class of proteins) that regulates gene expression. PPAR controls glucose metabolism and fatty acid storage, while the genes it activates promote the generation of adipocytes from stem cells.

XN and TXN act as PPAR 'antagonists', as they bind to the protein without activating it, unlike a PPAR 'agonist', which would simultaneously activate and bind it. The result of competition in this case is the lowest concentration of fat in the liver.

Furthermore, the results showed that TXN accumulated better in the liver than XN, which may explain why it was more effective in lowering lipids, but the difference in tissue accumulation was not fully understood./ CNA
