The UN warns of the risk of dying of hunger in some countries

Two United Nations (UN) agencies warned on May 29 of a growing food crisis, including the risk of starvation in Sudan, the cause of war, and in Haiti, Burkina Faso and Mali due to restrictions on the movement of people and goods.

These four countries join Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen on the list of countries facing a deep food crisis and at risk of heading "towards catastrophic conditions".

The report by the World Food Program and the Food and Agriculture Organization – both UN agencies – calls for urgent aid in order to save many people. In addition to the nine countries rated at the highest risk of food crisis, the agencies said a total of 22 countries have been identified as being at risk of facing acute food insecurity.

Acute food insecurity describes the situation when a person's life is put at risk due to their inability to consume adequate food.

"Typical paths are no longer an option in today's risk landscape if we are to achieve global food security for all and ensure that no one is left behind," said Qu Dongyu, director-general of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. -'s.

He called for immediate action in the agricultural sector "to move people away from the brink of hunger, help them rebuild their lives and provide long-term solutions to address the root causes of food insecurity." .

The report cited the potential expansion of the war in Sudan, deepening economic crises in poor countries and growing concerns that El Nino could trigger extreme climate conditions in the most vulnerable countries.

The report warns that one million people are expected to flee Sudan, while adding that another 2.5 million inside Sudan will face acute food insecurity in the coming months as supply routes through Port Sudan are cut off for security reasons.

The executive director of the World Food Program, Cindy McCain, warned of "catastrophic" consequences if action is not taken to "help people adapt to a changing climate and ultimately prevent hunger"./ Rel
