Diabetes rates have doubled worldwide in 30 years

Since 1990, the rate of diabetes has doubled, with 800 million people affected by the disease.

Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 95% of cases, is on the rise in poorer countries. However, in these resource-poor countries, only half of people are treated, said a team reporting Nov. 13 in the journal The Lancet.

This means that about 445 million people with diabetes are not controlling their blood sugar levels.

At the same time, people living in wealthier nations saw an increase in their treatment rates, noted a team led by Majid Ezzati of Imperial College London (ICL).

"This is particularly worrying as people with diabetes tend to be younger in low-income countries and, in the absence of effective treatment, are at risk of lifelong complications, including amputation, heart disease, kidney damage or loss of vision or in some cases, premature death," he noted in a news release in the journal.

Diabetes rates rose faster in poorer countries. While some rich countries such as Japan, Canada, France, Spain and Denmark saw no change or slight declines, the opposite was true for countries with lower income sources./ CNA
