A large-scale study conducted in China in collaboration with the University of Oxford between 2004 and 2008, which included more than half a million adults aged 30 to 79 from 10 geographically diverse countries across China, showed that consuming an egg a day helps you with heart disease.

What do you need to know?

Participants were followed for incidence and mortality rates, focusing on cardiovascular disease outcomes including coronary heart disease, major coronary events, hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke. The study aimed to investigate the links between egg consumption and the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The results showed that compared to those who rarely or never consumed eggs, individuals who reported daily consumption (an average of about 0.76 eggs per day) were associated with a lower risk of heart disease.

Specifically, daily egg consumption was associated with reductions in the risk of ischemia and coronary problems, hemorrhagic stroke, and ischemic stroke.

Significant relationships were also observed between egg consumption and all heart problems studied. Additionally, daily consumers showed an 18% lower risk of death and a 28% lower risk of death from hemorrhagic stroke compared to non-consumers.

This research suggests that a moderate level of egg consumption (up to less than 1 egg per day) may be associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease among adults, largely independent of other dietary factors and lifestyle. /AgroWeb.org
