This tiny wildflower could be a secret weapon against superbugs

A new scientific study suggests that a plant used for centuries in traditional European medicine may have potential in the fight against bacterial infections resistant to modern treatments.

It is about tormentil root (Potentilla erecta), a wild flower that grows in Europe and has been historically used to treat wounds, throat infections, and digestive problems.

According to researchers, extracts of this plant have shown antimicrobial activity in the laboratory, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and the formation of biofilms - structures that protect bacteria and make them more difficult to eliminate.

The research focused on over 70 plant species collected from various natural areas, with the aim of identifying substances that could help fight serious infections, including bacteria that cause pneumonia and urinary tract infections.

The results showed that when tormentil extract was combined with certain antibiotics, the effectiveness of the treatment was increased, even at low doses.

Researchers have identified several natural compounds in plants that appear to act by blocking the bacteria's supply of iron, a vital element for their growth.

Experts point out that these findings could be important in tackling antimicrobial resistance, a growing problem globally.

However, they warn that the research is still in the laboratory stage and further studies are needed before it can be used in treatments for humans.

Scientists underline that nature continues to remain an important source for the discovery of new drugs and the development of future medical treatments./ CNA
