Study: Flu vaccine reduces risk of heart attack and stroke

A new scientific study shows that the flu vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular complications, such as heart attack and stroke, even in people who get the flu despite being vaccinated.

According to researchers, flu infection causes inflammation in the body, which temporarily increases the risk of heart and circulatory problems. The study, published in the journal Eurosurveillance, highlights that vaccination helps mitigate this risk.

The research, led by Roberto Croci from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, analysed over 1,200 patients over 40 years old in Denmark, hospitalized after a heart attack or stroke within a year of flu infection (2014–2025).

The results showed that in the first week after flu infection, the risk of stroke was significantly increased, while that of heart attack increased up to five times.

However, in vaccinated people, this increased risk was halved, even in cases where they were infected with the influenza virus.

The researchers say the findings strengthen the argument that flu vaccination offers not only protection against the disease, but also a protective effect on the heart. They emphasize that further studies are needed to analyze the differences between vaccines and other influencing factors./ CNA
