The seeds, which are known for their protective properties for both the heart and the digestive system, turn out to be an ally in the battle against the most common malignancy in women.

According to a study published in "Microbiology Spectrum", flax seed, a "treasure" for human health, can join the arsenal against breast cancer.

Flaxseed lignans, a compound found in high-fiber foods and beverages such as whole grains, seeds, nuts, oats, rye, wheat, coffee, tea, and wine, reduce the risk of breast cancer through a mechanism involving the gut microbiome. intestinal and mammary gland miRNAs, a class of small RNA molecules that have been associated with various types of cancer such as the bay.

The findings, the researchers comment, could pave the way for new interventions to prevent the most common malignancy in women.

Flaxseeds and phytoestrogens

Research has attributed the protective effect of lignans to their very nature. As phytoestrogens, plant compounds that act similarly to estrogen, they bind to estrogen receptors and prevent the occurrence of estrogen-dependent diseases such as breast cancer. Consequently, they have been linked to inhibition of tumor growth and apoptosis in prostate cancer cells, thanks to their anti-androgenic and antioxidant properties.

Finally, flaxseed has also been shown to be effective in treating peptic disorders such as constipation, reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol and, therefore, the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
