Scientists warn/ An itchy nose can increase the risk of this disease

The study conducted by Griffith University researchers on mice revealed a link between nasal itching and the accumulation of proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease.

They said that moving around your nose can damage the inner protective tissues, making it easier for dangerous bacteria to reach your brain.

The brain in turn responds to this interference in a way that mirrors the conditions created by Alzheimer's disease.

It is a devastating disease that gradually affects sufferers' brain function and memory, becoming more severe over time.

The team of researchers in Queensland, Australia, conducted tests on a bacterium called Chlamydia pneumoniae, a rare type of microbe that can cause respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia.

Bacteria have also been detected in the brains of people with dementia.

Griffith University researchers found that Chlamydia pneumoniae bacteria "used the nerve that runs between the nasal cavity and the brain as a route to invade the central nervous system."/ CNA
