What bacteria can survive on clothes after washing?

A new study suggests that washing clothes worn at home may not be as effective at disinfecting them as previously thought.

Healthcare-associated infections are infections that occur primarily in patients while they are hospitalized in hospitals or other healthcare facilities and were not present at the time of admission or in the early stages of their illness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 10 hospitalized patients worldwide develop at least one hospital-acquired infection.

Research has shown that 52% of healthcare workers come into contact with resistant bacteria through contaminated surfaces, while 40% can become infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) simply by touching a contaminated object.

The persistence of microbes on surfaces and fabrics is impressive:

-E. coli bacteria can survive for more than 28 days on stainless steel.

-MRSA can survive for more than six weeks on steel and for more than 90 days on plastic surfaces.

-The fungus Candida albicans survives for three days on glass and metal surfaces, while it can remain active on fabrics for up to 14 weeks.

-Norovirus can remain on clothing and fabric-covered objects, such as chairs, sofas, and pillows, for up to a month, infecting anyone who touches them.

-Resistant strains such as MRSA (antibiotic-resistant staphylococcus) have been found on the clothing of hospital patients.

This data shows that traditional cleaning methods, while necessary, are not sufficient to eliminate the threat. In addition, researchers from De Montfort University argue that many household washing machines may be unsuitable for disinfecting clothing and potentially contribute to the spread of acquired infections and antimicrobial resistance./CNA
