"Triathlon Pogradec 2026"/ Lake Ohrid challenges the first triathlon athletes in the lakeside city

Pogradec turned into a major sports arena this Sunday, where for the first time a triathlon competition was held in the waters and streets of the city. “Triathlon Pogradec 2026” brought to the heart of the city, with the Odeon Square as the activity center, about 100 athletes from Albania and the region, while hundreds of citizens and sports fans closely followed the special challenge.

The race started at 09:00 with the swimming discipline in the waters of Lake Ohrid, one of the most challenging segments for the athletes. Then, the athletes continued the bicycle race on the streets of Pogradec and the surrounding areas, to close with the running discipline, in a confrontation that required physical preparation, endurance and maximum concentration.

The triathlon was held in two main categories, Sprint and Olympic, in both individual competitions and the "Relay" team format, bringing athletes of different ages to Pogradec, from 13-year-olds to veterans of this sport.

The organizer of "Triathlon Pogradec", Julian Lekoçaj, says that the choice of the lakeside city was not accidental, as the nature and terrain offer all the conditions for holding such an event.

"We are in Pogradec because Pogradec is blessed by nature and has all the favorable conditions to organize a triathlon race. We came for the first time with the "Triathlon Pogradec" edition, with the aim of turning it into an annual tradition and adding it to other events taking place in Tirana, Shkodra and Himara. Over 100 athletes participate in this race, competing in two categories: Olympic and Sprint. We came to awaken Pogradec a little in terms of sports, not only with running races, but also with a special discipline like triathlon. Maybe in the future we can organize an "Ironman" type race."

For the participating athletes, the challenge in Pogradec was a special experience, not only for the difficulty of the race, but also for the nature and atmosphere that the city offered. Athlete from Kosovo, Albion Ymeri, described the race as a beautiful experience and an important step for the development of triathlon in Pogradec.

“Gara ishte e vështirë, por shumë e bukur. Pogradeci është një qytet shumë i bukur dhe fakti që po organizohet një triatlon këtu është diçka e jashtëzakonshme. Unë vij nga Kosova. Triatlone më parë nuk ka pasur në Pogradec, por kanë qenë garat e vrapimit dhe gjysmëmaratona e Pogradecit. Për triatlon është hera e parë. Kishim shumë sportistë të përgatitur. Me Gencin stërvitemi bashkë dhe jemi pak a shumë në të njëjtin nivel. Kështu vendosëm që njëri të garonte në Sprint dhe tjetri në kategorinë Olimpike, ndaj në fund mbetëm të dy të kënaqur. Klima është shumë e mirë. Është pothuajse e ngjashme me atë të Prishtinës. Lartësia mbidetare është e përafërt dhe ne stërvitemi në kushte të tilla, ndaj nuk ishte diçka ndryshe për ne.”

Edhe për triatletin nga Prishtina, Genci Isufi, organizimi i parë i këtij lloji në Pogradec ishte një sukses, ndërsa ai vlerësoi veçanërisht atmosferën dhe kushtet e garës.

“Unë profesion e kam triatlonin, jam triatlet. Gara ishte fantastike dhe, duke marrë parasysh që është organizimi i parë i një triatloni këtu në Pogradec, mund të them se ka pasur një organizim perfekt. Pjesa e notit ka qenë normalisht pak më e vështirë për mua, por pjesa e biçikletës dhe ajo e vrapit ishin fantastike. Unë vij nga Prishtina. Kam rreth 4-5 vite që merrem me sportin e triatlonit, ndaj edhe e konsideroj veten si triatlet.”

Mes pjesëmarrësve ishte edhe 19-vjeçari nga Selaniku, Andon Senka, i cili e provoi për herë të parë një garë triatloni në Pogradec dhe e vlerësoi veçanërisht segmentin e notit dhe pamjen e liqenit.

“Unë jam Andon Senka, jam 19 vjeç dhe vij nga Selaniku. Erdha këtu në Pogradec për të marrë pjesë në këtë garë. Ishte pak e vështirë. Noti ishte shumë i bukur, po ashtu edhe pjesa me biçikletë. Pamja me liqenin është shumë e bukur. Te vrapi e ngatërrova pak rrugën, por në përgjithësi ishte shumë mirë. Nuk është hera e parë që marr pjesë në triatlon, por është hera e parë që garoj në Pogradec. Kam marrë pjesë edhe në gara të tjera. Kam dalë i dyti në Greqi dhe jam nënkampion në Greqi. Jam shumë i kënaqur dhe shumë i lumtur. Edhe koha ishte shumë e mirë.”

Për vrapuesin dhe maratonistin pogradecar, Dorian Hoxhallari, evente të tilla janë një mënyrë për të promovuar sportin dhe për të afruar më shumë të rinjtë drejt një stili jetese aktive.

"Bëra distancën Sprint i vetëm, me kohë 1 orë e 21 minuta. Sigurisht, Pogradeci nuk zhgënjen asnjëherë, qoftë me natyrën, qoftë me mikpritjen, qoftë me organizimin. Ishte një garë fantastike, çdo gjë shkoi shumë mirë dhe besoj se të gjithë jemi të kënaqur. Ne mundohemi gjithmonë të promovojmë sportin. Sigurisht, rinia është paksa neglizhente, por përmes eventeve dhe mesazheve që përcjellim, përpiqemi të angazhojmë sa më shumë të rinj drejt sportit dhe një jetese të shëndetshme."

With the completion of this first race, “Triathlon Pogradec 2026” aims to not remain just a sporadic activity, but to turn into an annual meeting for local and foreign athletes. Beyond the race and competition, this activity brought another way to promote the lakeside city, combining sport, tourism and the natural beauty of the area.

The participation of athletes from different countries in the region and beyond shows the growing interest in developing such disciplines even outside of traditional sports centers. “Triathlon Pogradec 2026” ended with the success of a first edition, but with the ambition that in the coming years the competition will expand further, have more participants and become one of the most important sports activities taking place in the city of Pogradec./ CNA
