The candidate of the Socialist Party Vangjel Tavo won the race for mayor of Himara after partial local elections, which took place on Sunday, with about 1500 votes more than his rival Petraq Gjikuria.

The result is significantly higher than the local elections of a year ago when the opposition coalition candidate Fredi Beleri won with a narrow margin of 19 votes over his rival, Jorgo Goro.

According to the official data of the Central Election Commission, after counting the votes of 36 polling stations, Vangjel Tavo received 5022 votes (58.62%) against 3545 votes (41.38%) of Petraq Gjirkuria, candidate of the opposition coalition "We win together". ".

Through a message on social networks, Mr. Tavo appreciated the voters' vote and invited his rival to accept the position of deputy mayor.

"No longer as a candidate, but now officially as the mayor of Himare, I invite Mr. Petro Gjikuria to accept the position of deputy mayor. I am aware that this is unprecedented in the electoral history of the last three decades, so precisely for this reason, I start first with the concrete example of cooperation and union that this municipality deserves", said Mr. Tavo.

Mr. Gjikuria has not yet made any comment on the result, which was visible throughout the counting process. He himself did not wait for its conclusion, he left earlier from the premises where the votes were being counted.

Prime Minister Edi Rama described as "spectacular the victory of the new mayor of Himara" and "significant support for the Socialist Party". He invited immigrants to return to their homeland for better wages in the tourism industry.

One of the biggest problems that appeared in Sunday's voting in Himara was that about six thousand voters turned out with expired identity cards, a number that was greater than the winner's votes and 4 times greater than the difference between the candidates.

But not everyone has been unable to vote as there may be voters with valid passports among them. Likewise, the law allows all persons over 75 years of age to be provided with an identity card with a term of 50 years.
