The Greek media have published several articles about the elections in Himare and the victory of the SP candidate, Vangjel Tavo.

While "Protothema" quotes Omonia and writes that "terrorism won in Himara".

A victory for the candidate of the Socialist Party of Edi Rama, Vangelis Tavos, was the result of the votes in Himarru, which took place after the "adventurous dismissal from office" of the winner of the first elections, Fredi Beleri.

In 100% of the results, Tavos received 58.62% with 4,858 votes, while Petros Gjikurua, who is supported by Omonia and the opposition parties, collected 41.38% with 3,400 votes.

Vangel Tavo made a victory statement before the polls closed, thanking Himariots for their trust. Tavo repeated his invitation to the candidate Petro Gjikuria to accept the post of deputy mayor.

It is noted that yesterday there were accusations of vote buying and extortion by officials of the Socialist Party in Himarru just a few hours before the opening of the ballot box.

"Omonoia" denounced through a statement the involvement of a member of parliament and local party leaders in an attempt to influence the outcome of the elections, stressing that the evidence will not be published, but will be submitted directly to the court.

In a last ditch effort, in fact, just before the polls closed, Fredi Beleri invited his fellow citizens to go vote. "Resist! Do not leave the polling stations! Do not be afraid! Vote", was the message of the MEP from prison, where he has been for 425 days.

Edi Rama's chosen candidate, Vangelis Tavo, won the elections in Himara to succeed Fredi Beleri, the elected mayor and now the MEP who remains in prison.

According to the official announcement, Tavo received 59% of the votes (4858 votes), while Petro Gjikuria, supported by the Greek minority, received 41% (3400 votes).

Omonia's election walkout representatives told SKAI that "terrorism won in Himara".

In his first statement, Tavo heartily thanked Edi Rama and the structures of the Socialist Party for their support and repeated his pre-election offer for Gjikurias to take the post of deputy mayor of the Municipality.

The Albanian government was trying to prevent another unpleasant surprise with the election of Petro Gjikurias, who is supported by Omonia and opposition parties and is the successor of Beler who won the May 2023 elections.  /CNA
