The mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has "sunk" Lulzim Basha in the case of the Tirana incinerator.

Veliaj said in an interview with Sokol Balla that the landfill of Sharra was not an initiative of the municipality headed by him.

He claimed that the IFC study on waste treatment in the capital was requested by Lulzim Basha's administration in 2015, when the latter was mayor.

The socialist mayor stated that at the time he took over the municipality, he received the feasibility study report ready from Basha and according to him, waste treatment was at a price of 37 euros/ton.

"The former Mayor of the Municipality, Mr. Basha, rightfully so, assisted by the World Bank, conducts a study with foreign IFC consultants, who look at Tirana's waste treatment needs. Tirana then, of course, was smaller - if I'm not mistaken, it produced 400-500 tons of waste per day, whereas today we are at 700-800 tons/day of waste, and for holidays we go to 1000 tons/day. At that time, the colleagues of the IFC, the World Bank, after the change of administration, came to me and said that the end of the consultancy was left because the feasibility study was done as co-financing between the Municipality of Tirana and the World Bank of the IFC, and I took it report ready. The report made by that administration concluded for 37 euros/ton. Since all the work was done before I came to the municipality, the mayor was obliged to present to the government what the administration had done before. This is that 2015 report. In 2015, the government says that the price of 37 euros/ton is too much. Rightly so, and rejects it. Therefore, the Municipality of Tirana has never initiated such initiatives again, as it finished the financial obligations of the consultancy with the IFC and the World Bank", emphasized Veliaj./ CNA
