Prime Minister Edi Rama participated this Friday in the book promotion ceremony of American Ambassador Christopher Hill.

In his speech, Rama described the diplomat as a special figure in the history of American relations with the Balkans.

Rama said that if he had been commissioned to write a book about American ambassadors in the Western Balkans, the title would be "The Ghost and the Prima Donna."

 "I mean, if I were commissioned to write a book for American ambassadors in this region, the title would be 'The Ghost and the Prima Donna', the ghost being Hill and the others being Prima Donnas. As time goes by, Prima Donnas slowly fade, while the ghost doesn't. His name is always recycled and is also associated with some very attractive conspiracy theories. I have to say that the first time I heard about Christopher Hill was when I was told that he had put Fatos Nano in prison.

It was an impressive way to leave your name behind, since you had just entered Albania and simply weren't engaged in any reforms, but had simply taken someone to prison and left.

There is something I can say for sure, and I think I am certain when I say it, that Christopher Hill is perhaps the only American diplomat who has served as ambassador to this region who does not understand the Balkans from a distance, but understands them from within, because he has lived the Balkans in all its corners. He has practically traversed its entire map and strangely has never shown any temptation to become any influencer.

"He was present as a master whisperer. I don't know what he whispered to the prime ministers and presidents of the countries where he served, but what I do know is that when I met him for the first time, Christopher Hill left a big impression on me. He didn't seem like a jailer of opposition people. Secondly, he left an impression on me with the way he listened," Rama said. /CNA
