Rama to "The Observer": Albania can help the EU survive, just give us

Prime Minister Edi Rama, in an interview with the renowned British media outlet "The Observer", spoke extensively about the situation in the EU, Europe and Albania's journey towards integration.

Among other things, Rama has stated that Europe must change quickly, and according to him, Albania must also be part of this change, which through membership can help the Union regain the lost balance between bureaucracy and internal strife.

“There is a darkness in Europe and I see no way out. There are people trying to do the right thing, but I see no strategy. Thinking that the problem is somewhere else doesn’t help. It is in Europe. It is us. Europe itself is out of balance: its bureaucracy weighs more than politics and its internal strife seems bigger than the shared horizon.

If you single out a community, you can expect members of that community to be hurt, attacked, injured, beaten. We know from history that this is what happens. When you enter a race with the far right, you lose, because when it comes to choosing who is tougher on issues like immigration, the instinct is to choose the original, not the copy. Do you think you can dance with the devil? The devil wins the moment he steps on the dance floor.

Europe must change and it must change quickly. Everyone says it, everyone is aware of it, and yet others are moving at a much faster pace. Bring us into Europe and I am ready to sign an agreement that clearly states that we do not want to have the power of veto. We will never use our vote against the majority. Nor do we want our commissioner.

"We can make an agreement with Italy and the Italian commissioner will be our commissioner. We are ready to do this as a guarantee against any fear that some crazy guy from the Balkans will enter the club with the power of veto and start imposing things," Rama said. /CNA
