Lezha Region, the only "battleground"

The term "battleground" has begun to be widely used in Europe for regions where the electoral competition is very strong and the leading party is determined by a very small percentage of votes. 

This term has its origins in American presidential races, where it is used for a few states that determine the presidential winner (indeed, Trump returned to the White House only thanks to a very small lead in three states: Wisconsin 0.8%, Michigan 1.4%, Pennsylvania 1.7%.).

In our May 11 elections, Lezha was the only district where, when the vote counting was finished, the leading party could be determined with a lead of less than 1%. 

In other districts, the first party in the district has a clear lead over the second, starting with Shkodra (2.6% lead), and ending with Berat (51% lead).

In Lezha Region, the race became so close this time, because PD+LSI+etc. (recently united in the Alliance for a Greater Albania) received much fewer votes than in the 2021 elections (the comparison was made with the votes here, because the diaspora did not vote in 2021). 

Thus, in the entire Lezha Region, PD+LSI+etc. received a full 12,000 local votes less than in 2021. On the other hand, the SP received 300 local votes more and the small parties a full 5,300 local votes more (see the table below).

By penetrating deeper into the region, the PD+LSI+etc. created the largest electoral hole in the Kurbin Municipality, the second largest by population in the region – the hole was full of 5,500 votes. In the Lezha Municipality, the electoral hole was full of 4,700 votes, and in the Mirditë Municipality, 1,800.

The SP saw growth in the two large municipalities, especially in the Kurbin Municipality (1200 votes). While in the Mirditë Municipality, the SP's votes shrank by a full 1100. On the other hand, small parties saw proportional growth in all three municipalities of the region.
