Findings of the draft report on Albania/ EP Committee assesses SPAK's

This Tuesday, the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs discussed the findings of the draft report on Albania, drafted by rapporteur and Austrian MEP Andreas Schieder.

Schieder highlighted the rapid progress of the opening of the Basic Group Chapters in October 2024.

"We have several key messages on the stage. One of them is the recent rapid progress in opening the Basic Chapters Group in October 2024 and the External Relations Chapter Group in December 2024 and Albania's plan to open further chapters in the coming year," said Schieder.

Schieder emphasized that anti-corruption reforms need to be consolidated.

"Overcoming internal political polarization, the rule of law must be strengthened and anti-corruption reforms must also be consolidated. For electoral reforms, the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations must also be addressed and implemented, and more progress must also be made on media independence," Schieder continued.

Schieder particularly emphasized the work done and the progress of SPAK and praised the good progress made in the implementation of the Justice Reform.

"Good progress has been made in the implementation of the Justice Reform, including the Vetting process and the increasing performance of SPAK," said Schieder.

The draft report for Albania highlights the “key work” of the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime of Albania (SPAK).

This, in terms of building a history of investigation, prosecution and conviction in high-level corruption cases, warns against undermining its work.

The draft report initially welcomes the progress Albania has made in implementing justice reforms, including the vetting process, which has been completed in the first instance. /CNA
