The draft of the new Criminal Code, which is currently in the public consultation phase, provides for harsh penalties through several of its articles.

Three of them are the penalties provided for cohabitation, bigamy, and public order.

Regarding cohabitation with a minor under the age of 18, according to Article 745, cohabitation with a minor for purposes similar to marriage is provided for as a criminal offense and with different penalties, depending on the age of the minor.

According to the article, cohabitation of an adult with a minor aged 14 to under 16 is punishable by imprisonment of 4 to 8 years. If cohabitation occurs with a minor aged 16 to 18, the punishment is 2 to 5 years.

According to Article 742, bigamy shall be punished by a fine or imprisonment of up to three years. If bigamy continues after the first conviction, it shall be punished by imprisonment of six months to four years.

Meanwhile, the penalty for disturbing public peace is being changed with a reduction in the sentence. The draft provides that persons who disturb public peace will be punished with a fine or imprisonment of up to 3 months. /CNA
