Balla responds to the opposition: Work on electoral reform will continue in

In response to the accusations raised by opposition MPs at the 19th meeting of the Albania-European Union Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee, Minister of State, Taulant Balla, emphasized that the government and the opposition have taken important joint steps towards electoral reform.

Balla reiterated the need to immediately begin work on electoral reform in September.

"And of course, in the upcoming reform there is something that we definitely have to agree on. So we need to foresee in the Electoral Code the way in which members of the European Parliament are elected. So, in essence, we have something that we can agree on. Also, another issue that seems to find broad support is the fact that we need to move forward with the depoliticization of the electoral commissions at the second and third levels. Therefore, I think that, to reiterate what was said by one of our colleagues, that starting from September we always act the same, every September, as soon as the new legislature starts, we undertake it; but this time we definitely have to do it. And of course, with consensus. As is always required for electoral reform", said Balla.

Balla specifically mentioned the approval of the vote for Albanians living abroad.

“The vote of Albanians living abroad was an important step taken together with the opposition,” Balla said, underlining that cooperation between the parties has brought tangible progress in reforming the electoral system. Regarding allegations of irregularities and lack of results in the fight against electoral crimes, Balla stressed that the current recount process is an example of a credible process and acceptable to both parties. What is currently happening with the recount process is a credible process, which both parties are doing,” Balla said./CNA
