Beating the sensational film "Brokeback Mountain"/ How the film

20 years ago, the interracial drama “Crash” took the Oscar from the box office record-breaking and audience-smashing film of the year, “Brokeback Mountain,” in what has been called the most controversial Oscar win in the history of cinema. People, including the screenwriter himself, reflected on what happened.

On March 5, 2006, Paul Haggis's film "Crash" was announced the winner of the 78th Academy Awards, a decision so shocking that even actor Jack Nicholson, who announced the winner among other competing films, reacted in surprise after reading the winning title aloud.

The drama, which centers on race and racism in Los Angeles, featured a controversial choice: It was a surprise win over the popular film "Brokeback Mountain," a gay love story. Twenty years later, the film and its win continue to stir debate.

How did a low-budget film manage to win the top prize?

The film was made 10 years after the infamous Rodney King incident, where an African-American young man in Los Angeles became a victim of police violence, a pivotal moment that sparked massive demonstrations across the city.

"People thought the problem of racism had passed and the director wanted to bring it into focus once again," co-writer and producer Bobby Moresco told the BBC.

Why did critics react? The backlash began immediately, when some critics suggested that homophobia existed in the film industry, considering this as the reason why “Brokeback Mountain” lost./ CNA
