Murder of activist Charlie Kirk/Trump: A dark moment for America

US President Donald Trump and a group of Republican and Democratic officials condemned the shooting that took the life of activist Charlie Kirk, a close ally of the US president.

In a video message posted on Truth Social, Trump said he was "filled with grief and anger over the horrific murder of Charlie Kirk."

"Charlie inspired millions and tonight all who knew and loved him are united in shock and horror. Charlie is a patriot who dedicated his life to the cause of open debate and the country he loves so much, the United States of America," the US president said.

He is a model for truth and freedom, and there has never been anyone who has been so highly respected by young people.

"Charlie was also a man of deep faith. And we take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace with God in heaven," Trump said.

Trump said that "the political violence of the radical left has hurt many innocent people." He cited the assassination attempt against him and the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year.

First Lady Melania Trump has also paid tribute to Kirk - who was married with two children.

In a post on X, she said that "his children will grow up with stories instead of memories, pictures instead of laughter, and silence where their father's voice should have echoed."

Kirk's life should "serve as a symbolic reminder that compassionate awareness elevates family, love and country," Melania Trump said./ CNA
